JIM SOUTHCOTT

We regret to advise members of the recent death of our long-standing member Jim Southcott. We aren't absolutely certain when Jim joined the Society, we suspect it was in 1960 or 61 thus making him we think, until his passing, the third surviving member after Don Seaby and Don White.

Newer members may not have recognised that Jim was a member as he'd not been to meetings for many years, much of his absence being due to illness in later years, but he continued to supply the Packet Secretary with books of GB material until recent times.

Born in London in August 1926 he served the last twelve months of WW2 with the Cheshire Regiment in Egypt. Shortly after being demobbed he joined the Fire Service in Islington and after a few years he moved to Bucks, serving first in High Wycombe and later in Aylesbury He loved the life as a fireman but had to retire in his mid 50s, after which he worked for McMinns of Chesham, finally retiring at age 65.

As well as being a keen stamp collector Jim owned a very impressive collection of model fire engines.

At his funeral four serving fireman provided a guard of honour and a fireman's helmet was placed on the coffin. The cortege was preceded by a serving fire engine. All very impressive and one can see how well the fire service looks after its own.

The society was represented at his funeral.
